Discussing Racial & Equity Issues Can Cause Stress & Anxiety
Discussing Racial & Equity Issues Can Cause Stress & Anxiety
Talking about race, especially with those who don't share your race, can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Although there's a widely believed myth that talking about race makes things worse, due to the fact that race is unavoidable for people of color and continues to make things uncomfortable and inequitable, discussing race has to take place. The fear of saying the wrong thing or being considered a racist often results in White silence which is a passive way of avoiding the conversation and feelings of discomfort. Allow me to help your staff develop the skills necessary to truly listen to the experiences of others, and engage in personal reflection about their own racial narratives. Truly listening to each other as we talk about race allows the participants to recognize that our individual truths may share more commonalities than we once believed. It is only through grappling with uncomfortable inter-racial conversations that we as a community can grow & be challenged to work together to end structural, systemic, and institutional racism.
