Diversity

Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect, recognizing that each individual is unique with individual differences. These can be related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Schools and organizations must seek to move beyond simply tolerating one another, to truly understanding and embracing differences, rather than encouraging assimilation.

 

Equity

 Equity ensures everyone has access to the same opportunities. Equity recognizes that some people receive more advantages than others  and often theses barriers are not "easy" for everyone to immediately see.  Equity  acknowledges these issues and works to address the imbalance.  Organizations can begin to examine these inequities by looking at how employees are hired, fired, given assignments, assigned to teams, and even celebrated.  Members of marginalized groups need to be invited to the discussion tape to provide their valuable input on any decision-making. 

 

 

Inclusion

Inclusion is about members of your team with different identities feeling and/or being valued and welcomed within a given setting (workplace or school) but that doesn’t mean that everyone (particularly those with marginalized identities  —  women, people with disabilities, the elderly, LGBTQIA people, and people of color) feels welcome or are valued, is given opportunities to grow, or gets career support from a mentor.  Having a diverse organization, doesn't mean that all employees will feel included, which can lead to employee turnover, poor employee productivity, and an unpleasant work culture.

 

 

 

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion's Positive Impact on Schools & Organizations  

 

To make true change, schools and organizations must develop a diverse team  that utilizes an anti-racist lens to drive all forms of equity.  Viewing the world through an intersectionality lens makes it evident that all systems of oppression are interconnected.  A redistribution of power and resources is just one way to create equity and fairness in workplaces.  As staff work to accomplish these goals it's imperative that all parties recognize that equity work  can be emotionally draining, it takes time, and no one is an EXPERT in this journey.  Organizational leaders must work to create a work culture of respect, compassion, and grace, where all employees feel safe to learn and work together on their public and  personal journey's with equity growth.

Dr. Nena S. Hisle, an accomplished educator, school counselor, and racial equity facilitator with more than two decades of experience in K-12 education.

 

Dr. Hisle holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Management & Leadership from Robert Morris University, where her groundbreaking dissertation explored the perceptions of racial microaggressions among Black and White teachers.

​

In addition to her work as a middle school counselor with Pittsburgh Public Schools, she serves as a racial equity facilitator with MMG Earth Research & Change Management Firm.

 

Dr. Hisle has led numerous professional development sessions on topics including implicit bias, racial trauma, and microaggressions in schools.

 

Her Courageous Conversations about Race challenge educators to reflect critically, disrupt inequities, and build inclusive learning environments for all students.

A published author and sought-after speaker, Dr. Hisle combines research, practice, and personal insight to engage audiences in transformative dialogue.
